Lightworks is a complete shareware video editor. The functionality of Lightworks is more modest than that of popular professional editors such as Adobe Premiere. However, calling Lightworks an editor for dummies is also wrong. Many professional editors have left positive comments about him. The positive characteristics of Lightworks are confirmed by the quality of films edited with this program, including: "The King's Speech", "Pulp Fiction", " Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels", "Aviator", "Batman Forever" and many others.
Of course, once you have installed Lightworks on your computer, you will not be able to immediately recreate the Hollywood special effects. However, basic editing tools are available and easy to use, and if you do not expect fancy compositing and post-processing from the software, Lightworks is unlikely to disappoint you.
Another advantage of Lightworks is low system requirements, unpretentiousness to hardware. To work with the program, you need the QuickTime package, which the program itself will offer to install at the installation stage. You will also need to register an account.
You need to start working with the editor by setting the name of the project (the Name window) and specifying the frame rate (Framerate). After creating a project, the editor offers to import the working dаta: source video, audio or pictures. You can import data with copying to the project folder, without copying, or with automatic conversion of the file format to the one specified in the program settings.
The program interface is focused on the final editing of large projects (films), it is convenient for working with multiple source files and allows you to create multiple workspaces with simple switching.
If desired, the Lightworks user can purchase the full version of the program (Lightworks Pro). Its main difference from the free one is great opportunities for exporting video files (Lightworks Free only allows saving files for YouTube with a maximum resolution of 720p), as well as support for rendering on the timeline and a free choice of directory for saving video. None of them are necessary for amateur video editing and serve rather as a pleasant bonus for those who want to support developers financially.
The cost of the full version of the program for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux:
- monthly license - $ 24.99;
- license for a year - $ 174.99;
- "perpetual" license - $ 437.99.
